Some have long horns, some have short horns, and others have no horns at all.
But all of them have hooves, which is why they are so named.
Let’s start with the Giraffe, whose height of 3, 9 to 5, 2 metres makes him one of the key figures in the African landscape.
The Rhinoceros, the Elephant, and the Zebra also belong to the picture.
These are the best known hoofed mammals.

In addition to these, there are a lot of less well known animals, some of which we may have seen in zoos and whose names we have forgotten.
For example Kirks Dik-Dik (Madoqua kirkii), which is slightly bigger than a hare, making it the smallest Antelope in Africa.
It weighs 6Kg and is 30 cm tall.
These mini Antelopes are easy pickings for predators.
They stand perfectly still when danger looms. Often the male turns his head to keep watch while the female remains motionless.
If the situation escalates, they run off, springing and side stepping, looking for new cover.

There is also the African Wild Ass (Equus africanus), who has disappeared from much of its range.
In recent times, there were Wild Donkeys in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, and the Sudan.
The population of Wild Donkeys was estimated at 1000 animals. Since then the numbers have dropped dramatically.
In Somalia, the Wild Donkey has been completely eradicated through the civil war.
The situation in Ethiopia and the Sudan is similar. Eritrea is the only country with a fairly stable population of around 400 animals.
This species is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN.

The animals are named in English, French, German, and Latin.
The drawings have been done with much attention to detail.
