The poster “Pumpkins, Melons, Cucumbers” presents us with different types of pumpkins, melons, and cucumbers.
In addition to the splendid illustrations, there is a mass of well- researched information about, among other things:
Pineapple, Watermelon, Butternut Squash, Chayote, Calabash(Bottle Gourd), Acorn Squash, Pickling Cucumber, Honeydew Melon, Horned Melon, Japanese Cucumber, Loofah, Galia, Cucumber, Spaghetti Marrow, Watermelon, Courgette.
Did you know that to the North American Indian, small Pumpkins, called Squash (interesting for sports fans) belonged to the so called “three sisters“; this meant the three most important edible plants?
The other two sisters were Maize and Beans.
Or did you know that there are two theories as to the origin of the Cucumber?
One theory claims that the cucumber comes from northern India where it has apparently grown for 4000 years on the southern slopes of the Himalayas.
The other theory is that it cones from tropical Africa and found its way over Egypt to the Mediterranean countries.
The cucumber has been utilized in southern India since the New Stone Age.
It first came to northern Europe in Roman times.
The Loofah is also known as Sponge Gourd (Luffa aegyptiaca or Luffa cylindrical) and belongs to the pumpkin family.
The cylindrical fruit is made up of a dry thready material, the loofah.
This sponge is a delicate white mesh which is hard and rough when dry but soft in water.
The loofah has been known for years in Europe as a bath sponge.
So if you forget the sponge gourd while preparing some delicate dish-well, never mind.
The firm edge of the poster makes it easier to hang on the wall.
