It has been attested to have a general blood-purifying and blood-sugar lowering effect. Moreover, blackberries are an excellent source of vitamins A and C.
Blackberries are known as an old dyestuff for grey and brown tints. Dried leaves can be used for dyeing but even better are the fresh shoots, which push up through the ground in April.
Even today, you can see the results of dyeing with blackberries - usually on children’s pockets!
Since the cranberry is quite insensitive to frost, (it can tolerate -22°C) it is to be found in the northern hemisphere, from the northerly temperate zone up to the Arctic-circumpolar region.
In the Kalevala epic poem, Maid Marjatta becomes pregnant after eating a cranberry and the son she bears is wise from birth.
The Kalevala is a book and epic poem which the Finn Elias Lönnrot compiled in the 19th century from Finnish and Karelian folklore. It is held to be the national epic of Finland and is traditionally thought of as one of the most important works of Finnish literature.
