The term Allosaurus comes from Greek and means strange lizard.
Allosaurus belonged to the genus of large theropod dinosaurs that lived 155 to 145 million years ago in the late Jurassic period till the early Cretaceous period.
Finds from North America and Southern Europe have proved that they lived there.
Earlier finds in Tanzania and in Australia from the early Cretaceous period cannot be surely identified as Allosaurus.

Allosaurus belonged to the largest carnivorous dinosaurs of his time and was probably up to 12 metres long and 5 metres tall.
In addition, there are remains of a very large Allosaurus called Allosaurus maximus and Saurophaganax respectively, with an assumed length of up to 15 metres.

Two of the best known specimens of Allosaurus are Big Al and Big Al-A12, which were found by Swiss paleontologists in the USA and subsequently shown in the BBC Documentary “The Ballad of Big Al”

He was a carnivore and every once in a while he had youngsters of his own species for lunch.
The animal moved about on his hind legs, his relatively short arms were very strong and ended in a three finger hand with sharp claws.
Some scientists regard him as a scavenger, others as a hunter.
There are arguments to support both theories.
The lightly constructed skeleton and especially the construction of the strong hind legs and the skull which is designed to withstand great strains, suggest that he was a hunter.
There are indications of a possible cooperative interaction, for one thing through finds of several animals in one place (e.g. In the Cleveland Lloyd Quarry )and for another through finds of footprints of several large Theropods who were obviously running together.
Admittedly, neither of the indications gives verified proof of group behaviour.

Be that as it may, he was a fellow creature you wouldn’t really have wanted to have met.
